Did you hear the inaugural address by our new President, Mr. Obama? Well, I didn't -- but I read it the next day in the news. Being an advocate of sustainable living, I was really impressed by some things in that speech.
Remember that as the President of the U.S., Mr. Obama has to please all kinds of people. If he leans too strongly in any particular direction, he will alienate lots of voters.
Therefore, it was really good to see that he took a stand on pressing environmental issues in his inaugural address.
For example, he said that: "We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories."
A great statement -- it shows Mr. Obama is conscious of the need for a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle, and determined to take action.
"OK fine -- now what's that got to do with saving money?" you may ask.
It has everything to do with you being able to save money. You see, with this new friendly attitude from the White House toward renewable energy, we are likely to see more interest in giving people like you and me some encouragement to take action.
Suppose you don't like your high utility bill , for example. What to do? Well, if you are a home owner you could install solar panels and harvest free energy as electricity, straight from the sun! OK, I know: such photovoltaic panels used to be painfully expensive. But not anymore. They are getting cheaper every day, and nowadays they could pay for themselves in maybe a year or two.
Actually, even sooner if you install them yourself. And if you also get some subsidies from the Government, then the bottom line looks even better!
Solar panels are said to typically last for more than twenty years -- and give you free electricity each day during all those years.
